One Fine Day: Softball at Sea
If you ever believed that softball can only be played on land, the following photos will finally change that. Seafarers deal with the boredom of isolation and being away from their families by having recreational activities such as sports. The photos below were taken onboard the KAI-EI, a 300,000 deadweight VLCC (very large crude carrier). She is a gentle giant of 330 meters long, 60 meters wide and 30 meters deep. The accomoodation is seven stories tall including the navigating bridge.
One fine day while we were navigating the Arabian Sea, we reckon that it’s a good chance to give our muscles some flexing. Immediately after breakfast, all crew mustered on the main deck i.w.o. the helicopter winching area. We started the event with “Taisu”, a good way to stretch and prevent any muscular strain. As soon as the teams were formed, we started the game on top of the deck of a ship laden with 2 million barrels of crude oil. Should you be wondering how we play the game, drop me a line and I’ll be glad to elaborate further.
